Anthropocene Beach
(formerly Apocalypse Beach)
Anthropocene Beach is an allegorical zone where instability is juxtaposed with moments of leisure and intimacy, where the indifference of individual experience meets the indifference of an environment poised to swallow us whole.
This series is made up of looping datamoshed GIFs created from footage shot on beaches throughout South Florida and New England. Datamoshing is a glitch technique that operates on the way certain compressed video formats encode data onto individual frames. Keyframes (or i-frames) contain a complete rundown of a frame's pixel data, while p-frames only contain information on the pixels that move within a frame. Datamoshing is the process of removing i-frames so that the motion encoded in p-frames can run wild.
