So on the one hand, you can train a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to produce a cubist work that would seamlessly fit into a data set of 20,000 cubist works, which is amazing. But then, on the other hand, you have Le Mystère Mario Paint, which uses the same brush strokes programmed in its “attract mode” over and over again, only it produces random outputs depending on how the Mario Paint ROM is glitched. It’s a work of blind proceduralism, where the structures and strictures of the software become unwitting materials for artistic production. Artificial Intelligence contrasted with Glitch Intelligence, the tendency of using aggregated referents to guide a digital process contrasted with the tendency of a digital process to go on independent of the referents.
