Um Longo Retorno
In 2019, I visited the town my where my mother was born and where her family resides. It was my first trip back to Brazil in 24 years, partly because of family drama, but mostly because I was undocumented in the US for 16 years, which prevented me from traveling back home and seeing my family during a literal lifetime. For my first trip back, I brought my Canon S90 point-and-shoot, which was the camera I used as an undocumented student. The S90 was one of the first Canon point-and-shoot to offer raw image capture, so for this series, I databent the RAW .cr2 files with a hex editor to bring back rough textures that hearken to the faded memory of a distant homeland, of the absent pain of separated family.
